It was revealed on Thursday that a builder from l’Alcora who was arrested on Monday on suspicion of trafficking in stolen works of art, had in his possession the hand-painted wall tiles which were stolen from the Palacio de Vallvert in Valencia last year.
The tiles were prised off the wall and stolen one by one over a period of months. The builder’s wife and another man were also taken into custody, but police have not yet located the thieves themselves.
The 1,932 tiles covered an area of 406 square metres and depicted scenes from 18th century Valencia. Their total worth is put at almost 2 million €.
Police say the builder paid just 66,000.
