£24m painting 'not a fake'

A WORLD-famous museum yesterday rebuffed an expert's claim that a painting
it bought for more than £24.4 million was not a medieval masterpiece but a
fake. 

New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art said it had "no reason to doubt" the
authenticity of Madonna and Child, attributed to Duccio. 

James Beck, an art history professor at Columbia University, says techniques
used in the painting, said to date from about 1300, show that it is actually
an "unpleasant" forgery created 600 years later.
