The Interpol has joined into the search for the missing "Winged Sea-Horse"
brooch, the central piece in the permanent "Treasures of Croesus" exhibition
which was found earlier this year to have been replaced by a fake and
smuggled out of the Usak Archeological Museum.
A sweep of people believed to have been involved in the theft from the
Aegean-based museum wound up in the arrest of 10, including Usak museum
director Kazim Akbiyikoglu.
At a press conference on the ongoing operation to recover the "Winged
Sea-Horse," Istanbul police chief Celahattin Cerrah said "We have started a
wide spread investigation, with the belief that the piece could in fact be
in Istanbul. But many of the telephone conversations which took place
between the suspects were recorded in Bulgaria, which is why we have asked
for the help of the Interpol, in the belief that the piece could be in
Bulgaria, or in some other European country."
