UNESCO Urges Governments to Protect Heritage Sites from Global Warming
By VOA News

The U.N. Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization is urging
governments to protect World Heritage Sites - including Mount Everest and
Venice - from global warming.

At a conference in Lithuania Monday, UNESCO said the outstanding universal
value and integrity of these places must be protected from the adverse
effects of climate change.

The list of at-risk sites includes glaciers in Alaska, Canada, and
Greenland; barrier reefs along the coasts of Australia and Belize; and
Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro.

Also Monday, UNESCO removed four sites from its Danger List, citing improved
conditions for their survival - the 13th century cathedral in Cologne,
Germany; Senegal's Djoudj Bird Sanctuary; the Group of Monuments in Hampi,
India; and Ichkeul National Park in Tunisia.
