Truck stolen with art, dog in tow
Vehicle and pooch recovered; reward offered for other items
By Christine Steele
The Daily Reporter-Herald
When Mary DeForge's 2005 white Toyota 4Runner was stolen Tuesday afternoon
from the back of Henry's Pub, she took off running after it.
DeForge had nearly finished loading 30 pieces of just-framed artwork and
signed sports photographs headed for The Sports Station, Todd Riemersma's
new restaurant scheduled to open this month in the former Loveland railroad
depot.
Her SUV's hatch was open. The keys were in it. And so was DeForge's
6-year-old black and white Jack Russell terrier, Kobe.
Running down Cleveland Avenue hoping to save her dog, De Forge called 911 on
her cell phone to report the theft. Within minutes she got a call - from
Dairy Queen - where Kobe had been picked up - shaken, but safe.
Her vehicle, the artwork and her personal belongings were gone.
She immediately called and began notifying her credit card companies.
The next morning, while calling more credit card companies, DeForge
discovered someone was on a spending spree with her money in Greeley.
"I did my own investigation," she said.
She enlisted the help of several friends, and they set off driving around
Greeley looking for her stolen SUV.
DeForge's friend Vicki Dye spotted the vehicle in the Albertson's parking
lot at 23rd Avenue and Reservoir Road and called police. The driver had gone
into the store
When he came out, Greeley police arrested 24-year-old Noah Allen Wolfe.
Greeley police Sgt. Joe Tymkowych said Wolfe had no identification on him
when he was arrested and said he was from California.
Wolfe was charged with possession of a schedule II controlled substance,
felony aggravated motor vehicle theft, theft by receiving, resisting arrest
and being an unlicensed operator.
Additional charges are possible.
Two other suspects, a man and a dark-haired woman who were seen on tape with
Wolfe using DeForge's credit cards, have not been arrested. The pair are
considered persons of interest by the Greeley police.
Tymkowych said DeForge provided the police with the location of the vehicle,
and they were able to make an arrest.
"I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't taken it upon myself,"
DeForge said.
While she is relieved to have Kobe back, DeForge said she lost a lot of
things - such as film from a trip to Mexico - that can't be replaced.
Riemersma, who spent months collecting the signed sports photos, said he
still plans to open The Sports Station on June 12 and is offering a reward
for the return of any of the items.
