Two more British statues stolen, possibly for metal
June 3, 2006

London -- Two more bronze statues have been stolen in the past week in
England, adding to about 20 such sculptures that have already disappeared in
the past year, police said yesterday.

The large and heavy works fetch a good price on the black market for the
metal used to make them.

In the latest theft, on Saturday night, thieves made off with a statue by
Henry Pegram in Semley, Wiltshire, western England, worth £30,000 ($62,000).
The sculpture, 1.5 metres high and nearly 2 metres long, was of a soldier
from the First World War on horseback.

On May 20, a statue by Sydney Mason Collins of another soldier from the same
war, also on a horse, was taken from Chedzoy in neighbouring Somerset.

Last January, two very expensive pieces by sculptors Lynn Chadwick and Henry
Moore, estimated to be worth £600,000 and £3-million respectively as art
works, were stolen and have yet to be recovered. AFP
