Bronze statue stolen
Some time between June 2 and June 8, a bronze statue valued at $1,500 was
stolen from Gallery 'n' Gifts.
This is the fourth work of original art by Marjorie Colby - all sculptures -
that has been stolen from the local co-operative arts and crafts gallery
over the years.
"I can't believe it," Colby said the day the theft was discovered. "No one
is willing to buy my work but they sure like to steal them."
The most recent loss was titled "Decoy," a stunning small sculpture of a
man/lion, standing a little less than a foot tall, appropriate for a shelf
or table top.
Colby reckons it might be on its way to the East Coast by now, or she
wonders if "maybe, just maybe, someone might recognize it as a new
acquisition in somebody's home" in our own area.
Other works of Colby's that have been illegally removed from the gallery
include "Match Point," an 11-inch sculpture of a man taking a swing with his
tennis racquet, mounted on a 2-by-4-inch base of verde jade (green marble);
"Ode to Joy," an abstract female torso on English walnut standing about 8
inches tall; and a stallion rearing up with flowing mane and tail, also on a
walnut base with a height of about 10 inches.
"It's disheartening that people can sometimes be so mean," Colby said. "I'm
a little disappointed and disillusioned."
Colby is offering a $500 reward for information that leads to arrest and
conviction.
If you have seen any of the stolen artwork or if you can help point police
in the right direction, call the Kern County sheriff's office at 822-2222,
or Gallery 'n' Gifts at 822-6062.
