ALBUQUERQUE -- Two months after an arson fire gutted parts of the basement
at Zimmerman Library, the University of New Mexico has reopened part of the
building to students and faculty.
Pictures of the damage are posted in the lobby so visitors can see what the
fire did.
The basement contained bound periodicals and microfilm, and students looking
for those materials will find instead that the area is still closed to the
public.
Library staffers will have to retrieve any requested books or documents from
the basement or the second and third floors which are also closed.
"So they can come to the circulation desk, request a book and we'll be able
to go get it for them and bring it down." Assistant Library Dean Nance
Dennis said.
Zimmerman will operate under restricted hours--8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.--until
the fall.
Damage estimates to building and materials hover around $5 million.
Officials have confirmed the fire was deliberately set, but no one has been
identified as a suspect charged.
