Getty director 'had relics in villa'
By John Carr

Investigators claim to have found 12 important ancient relics in the Greek
island villa of Marion True, the former director of the Getty Museum in Los
Angeles, who is on trial in Rome on charges of complicity in antiquity
smuggling.

The discoveries deepen suspicion that some resort islands in the Aegean Sea
could be being used as hubs for the international antiquities black market.

Last month Greek and Roman statues, busts and coins were found on the islet
of Schinoussa.

George Voulgarakis, the Minister of Culture for Greece, said that the
present director of the Getty Museum would be in Athens on May 16 in
connection with the recent finds.

The objects found at the True villa on the island of Paros included two
Hellenistic sarcophagi, investigators said. The rest were said to be "of
small archaeological value". All were packed.
