Dear colleagues,
Staraya Ladoga Museum and Archaeological Consulting Co. Ltd. announce the
2nd international meeting "Security of Archaeological Heritage"
(Staraya Ladoga - St. Petersburg, Russia; April 19-22, 2007)

The detailed information and registration form are available at
http://www.archcons.spb.ru/index2.html
(If you don't want to receive further information on this meeting, please
send us a reply message with the word "refuse" in its subject field.)

Providing of security for the archaeological sites, their preservation in
the conditions of modern growing building and other economic activity is one
of the most important topics for today archaeology all over the world.
Especially this problem is very urgent for the archaeologists in Russia as
far as the appropriate legislative base was formed there just a few years
ago and the accepted laws just start to work. On the other hand, right now
the capital devel-opment is growing in Russia very rapidly. One more aspect
of this topic is (alas still) modern military actions and the archaeological
sites.

We consider this conference as a special meeting, which will pursue the
following goals:
- international exchange of the experience in all fields of preservation of
archaeological heritage (legislative ini-tiatives, public activity, field
works, etc.);
- informational support of the issues, which will be discussed at the
meeting via mass media;
- assistance for integration of Russian archaeological heritage into
world-wide context.

And of course we sincerely hope that the meeting will provide wide
opportunities for foreign archaeologists to become more closely to Russian
archaeological heritage and, on the other hand, - will involve more Russian
ar-chaeologists into world-wide archaeology.

We would like to suggest for the delegates the following items as the main
thematic directions:
- Legislative base for preservation of the archaeological sites
- Archaeological heritage and capital development
- Natural processes and destruction of the archaeological sites
- Modern military actions and archaeological heritage
- Security of archaeological sites and private collecting of antiquities

Of course this list is not definitive and we are ready to get from the
delegates proposals which have connection to any other aspects of security
of archaeological heritage.

On April 20 the Meeting will run in the three-star hotel "St. Petersburg"
(address: Pirogovskaya naberezhnaya 5/2, St. Petersburg) and on the next day
(April 21) it will be continued at Staraya Ladoga, where the round table
"Heritage Resource Management: legislation, business, researches" will take
place. Transportation to Staraya Ladoga and return and sightseeing tour
there (medieval stone fortress, church of St. George with the frescos of
12th century, archaeological exhibition) are included into the registration
fee.

Meantime we are informing you that the proceedings of the 1st international
meeting "Security of Archaeological Heritage" are prepared for publication
at the moment and the volume will be published by Cambridge Scholars
Publishing. And we would like to stress that we are going to look for an
opportunity of publication of the proceedings of this meeting too.

The language of the Meeting will be English. We will not provide
simultaneous translation. All forms, proposals, abstracts, etc. are accepted
in English only.
Emblem of the Meeting is the image "Adam excavating a ground" (from the
South Portal of Our Lady Cathedral in medieval Russian town Suzdal', 13th
century).
Official partner of the Meeting: travel company Galaktika Co. Ltd.

Take a chance to visit Staraya Ladoga and St. Petersburg!
We are happy to invite you to the so-called "first" and "northern" capitals
of Russia - Staraya Ladoga and St. Petersburg. Staraya Ladoga was founded as
Scandinavian settlement in the 8th century AD and during the 860s it was the
residence of the first Russian prince Ryurik. Pagan monumental barrows,
churches with the frescos of the 12th century, the medieval fortress and the
other historical sites are saved there till nowadays and make Staraya Ladoga
one of the brightest Russian medieval towns! St. Petersburg was founded by
the Russian Tzar Peter the Great in 1703 as "a window to Europe". The
appear-ance of St. Petersburg reflects the creative activity of many famous
European architects and joins the various ar-chitectural styles. The very
first Russian University and Academy were established in this city during
the 1720s (to-day's St. Petersburg State University and Russian Academy of
Sciences). Nowadays the city is one of the main cultural, research and
economic centers of Russia.
Plan your trip early! Please take into consideration that in order to come
to Russia most foreign citizens need an entry visa (yellow sticker in
passport which you can get at a local Russian embassy or consulate). You can
find the detailed informa-tion concerning entry visa at the meeting web-site
www.archcons.spb.ru <http://www.archcons.spb.ru/> . Here we would like just
to inform you that due to this circumstance your preparations for this
meeting will have to start earlier than for another your trips abroad.

Welcome to the international meeting "Security of Archaeological Heritage"!
We are looking forward to meet you in Staraia Ladoga and St. Petersburg in
April 2007!

Sincerely,

Dr Adrian Selin,
Staraya Ladoga Museum, Deputy Director
