Some stolen maps recovered, more still missing from Boston library

BOSTON -- Boston Public Library is missing 34 maps worth about $1 million.

The Boston Globe reports that although the man who confessed to stealing the
rare maps from helped authorities track many of them, more remain missing.

E. Forbes Smiley confessed to stealing nearly 100 maps from five cities
worth about $3 million.

In September, Smiley, who has a home on Martha's Vineyard, was sentenced to
more than three years in prison. He was also ordered to repay libraries
about $2 million.

Ronald Grim, curator of maps at the library, says the additional maps were
all in books smiley used, but it's not clear if they were intact when he
used them.

Library officials released an announcement to dealers detailing what they
are looking for.

The list includes a 1787 map of Virginia from a book once owned by Thomas
Jefferson.
