Subject: museum security careers

Hello --
I admit, I'm taking the easy path, writing you directly to ask you about
careers in museum security. However, it's worth a try, for me....
I am currently a Master's Degree candidate with the Distance Learning
Museum Studies course from University of Leicester, UK. I am half a year
into the program, with another year, plus a dissertation, to go. I have been
interested in museum security issues since, well, forever.... I studied Art
History at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, USA (B.A., 1979),
but was not as interested in researching artists and art works per se, as I
was interested in issues surrounding the protection of art assets,
safeguarding national heritage treasures (for any country, not just my own),
and ensuring that criminals are caught or even better, prevented from
initiating criminal acts.
I would love to have your insights into what attributes might be useful to
me in pursuing a career in this arena. I am carrying on with my Museum
Studies degree. I also have significant IT skills (computer programmer for 6
years, and skilled in current computer technology). I have significant 'life
experience', as people are wont to say (stopped out of work force for 20
years, raising 4 children and moving [many cities and countries] in the
process....) I'm a good writer, and a wide reader. Certainly, learning from
Jerry Symond's Leicester list-serve about your list-serve was a great day
for me, and every article you post gives me more reason to think I've chosen
the right career path.... It's all so fascinating...
Any thoughts you might have about how to get into the field, or what other
study (law/data security/??) would benefit me, would be most helpful.
I recognise that you must be very busy ... so any input will be gratefully
appreciated.
Yours very truly,
Ellie Dunham
