The head of a bronze statue of a Ukrainian poet stolen from an Oakville park
has been found.
Halton Regional Police recovered the 170-pound head of the 4.5-metre-tall
statue of Taras H. Shevchenko from a Burlington metal recycler who said he
bought the unusual piece on Dec. 12 from two men.

A visitor to the Taras H. Shevchenko Memorial Park on Dundas St. W. in
Oakville on Saturday reported the statue missing. The statue was erected in
1951.

Police believed the thieves used special equipment to cut the statue at the
feet from its marble base.

Curtis Raae, 36, of Oakville has been charged with possessing stolen
property.
