Painting stolen in area to be on display in Toledo

TOLEDO - A 229-year old painting by Spanish artist Franciso de Goya that was
stolen from Monroe County in November will be reinstalled in a Toledo, Ohio,
art museum for a limited time beginning today.

The Times Leader was the first to report the theft happened from a van while
parked outside the Howard Johnson's on state Route 611 while it was being
transported to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

Many published reports stated the painting was stolen from the Scranton
area.

Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation recovered the 1778 painting
in central New Jersey. No arrests have been made, but the case remains under
investigation.

The painting called "Children with a Cart," was returned to the Toledo
Museum of Art earlier this month. The museum is reinstalling the painting
for display for a limited time, the museum said.

"We are thrilled that this painting has been safely recovered and returned
home to Toledo," Museum Director Don Bacigalupi said. "I hope that everyone
in the community will take this opportunity to share our excitement and
welcome the Goya back to the collection."
