I am searching for information about a French police commissioner from the
early 20th century named Zamaron. I would really appreciate it if any of
this list's membership, hopefully our French friends on the list, can
share biographical info, history, and very important- photographs, on this
important figure of art history.
Here is a brief paragraph about Zamaron taken from Dan Franck's 1998 book
"Bohemian Paris":
As the officer in charge of foreigners at the Prefecture of Police in
Paris, Zamaron was the artists' friend. The walls of his office were
covered with their works: Suzanne Valadon, Modigliani, Soutine, Kikoine
and especially Utrillo, one of his special favourites. Whenever a
painter got into trouble, Zamaron came to the rescue. When he wasn't on
duty, he would often come to the Dome or the Rotonde to find his
friends. He frequently defended them from Descaves, the other Paris
policeman who was also an art lover. Descaves was nothing but a source
of problems for the Vavin painters. He would offer his services in
exchange for paintings. Sometimes he would buy one, pay a first
installment, and ask the artist to come and collect the remaining sum
at the Prefecture. Of course, no one ever went.
Thank you in advance.
