SSB seizes antique idol
Statesman News Service
SILIGURI, July 16: The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawans have seized a marble-made Ganesha idol from the Nepal border. The idol, claimed to be an antique one, was allegedly being smuggled into India from the Himalayan nation.
According to Mr Asok Biswas, assistant commandant, 22 Battalion of the SSB, the Ganesha idol was found on the Mechi riverbank at Bajaru Jote under the Khoribari police station area.
"Wrapped in a red cloth, the 22-inch high Ganesha idol was hidden under sand and our jawans spotted the idol during a routine patrol last night," Mr Biswas said, adding that the piece was probably stolen from a temple in Nepal and was being smuggled into India.
According to the SSB, the seized Ganesha was over 100 years old and was of immense value as an antique item. The SSB has handed over the idol to the Customs department, which would hand over the piece to the North Bengal University museum for preservation.
