Drawing Returned After Theft 2 Years Before
Last Update: Jun 9, 2007 12:48 PM
MILWAUKEE (AP) - A Eugene Delacroix drawing of one of his paintings in the
Louvre Museum has been returned to a Milwaukee gallery after being stolen
nearly two years ago.
The sepia drawing is called "Entry of the Crusaders Into Constantinople."
The French romantic artist drew it around 1840 as a study for a larger
painting that now hangs in Paris. The drawing was priced at $45,000.
Michael Goforth, the director of the DeLind Gallery of Fine Art, says a man
walked into the gallery yesterday afternoon and said he found the drawing in
the trash with the gallery's name on it.
The man asked Goforth what he would give him for it and Goforth offered him
$100. The man asked that police not get involved and Goforth agreed and gave
him the money.
Goforth says the drawing is irreplaceable and he cried when it was returned.
