    Thief steals 80 works of art from the Institute of the Arab World

Some 80 Islamic works of art and contemporary pieces have disappeared 
from the reserves of the Institute of the Arab World. Its president 
Dominique Baudis confirmed that they had lodged a complaint for theft.
 
“39 works of art belonging to the permanent collections and 38 pieces 
belonging to the Islamic art collection have disappeared from the 
reserves of the Institute,” said Mr. Baudis, adding that the thefts were 
discovered last week during stocktaking. 
 
According to Mr. Baudis, contemporary engravings and prints and cloths, 
mosaics, aquarelles and vases from the Islamic art collection have been 
stolen. 
 
The Institut of the Arab World is a foundation, based in Paris, which 
aims at introducing Europeans to Arab culture. It houses some 850 works 
of art.
