A PAINTING worth £30,000 was among a haul taken by thieves from a house in Ormskirk.

The painting entitled “Our Valley” by Lancashire artist Steven Townsend was taken from a house on St Helens Road during Bonfire Night on Monday.

It was in a distinctive silver frame and featured two dogs in a Lakeland landscape.

An £18,000 gold Rolex watch and a £10,000 ring were also taken along with a decommissioned World War II sub-machine gun, a black German machine gun, TV, camera, 2,000 cigarettes and £750 cash.

The 39-year-old homeowner was out at a charity bonfire when the thieves struck.

He told the Advertiser: “It’s a bit demoralising. It’s probably made me more aware of people around me.

“I am upset and angry but I think it’s a reflection of society and people around today. Whatever we strive to buy or own is never really ours because anyone can just come and take it.”

He said the platinum dress ring which is inset with seven diamonds held great sentimental value to him.

Police believe the raiders climbed over a rear fence before smashing their way through a patio door.

Investigating officer DC Kelly-Anne Rosenthal said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area or who saw anything suspicious to get in touch.

“Some of the items stolen are quite distinctive and I would ask anyone who may come across them to get in touch.”

Anyone with any information should ring Ormskirk CID on 01695-566443 or via Southern Communications Centre on 0845-1253545.
