The Rape of Europa begins its North American theatrical release
starting Friday, September 14th in New York City. The new Actual Films
documentary is based on Lynn H. Nicholas's landmark history of Adolf
Hitler, Hermann Göring, the Nazi’s large-scale theft of European art
and the Allied effort to preserve and return it. According to the
Toronto Star, The Rape of Europa "may be the most important documentary
of the year."

The film takes the audience on a journey through seven countries, into
the violent whirlwind of fanaticism, greed, and warfare that threatened
to wipe out the artistic heritage of Europe. For twelve long years, the
Nazis looted and destroyed art on a scale unprecedented in history.
But young art professionals as well as ordinary heroes, from truck
drivers to department store clerks, fought back with an extraordinary
effort to safeguard, rescue and return the millions of lost, hidden and
stolen treasures.

The Rape of Europa begins and ends with the story of Gustav Klimt’s
famed Gold Portrait, taken from Viennese Jews in 1938, now at the Neue
Galerie in New York and among the most expensive paintings ever sold.
Today, more than sixty years later, the legacy of this tragic history
continues to play out as families of looted collectors recover major
works of art, conservators repair battle damage, and nations fight of
the fate of ill-gotten spoils of war. Joan Allen narrates this
breathtaking chronicle about the very survival of centuries of western
culture.

On Friday, September 14th, co-director Richard Berge will be in New
York to answer questions at the Paris Theater after the 2:00, 4:20 and
9:30 screenings, and at the Angelika Theater after the 7:20 show. He
will be at all screenings at the Paris Theater on Saturday, September
15th.
