Waiouru medal team boosted

Police hunting for the stolen Waiouru war medals will be working through a
list of possible suspects this week.

A month after the 96 medals, including nine Victoria Crosses, two George
Crosses and one Albert Medal, were stolen from the North Island museum,
police are coy about their inquiries.

Detective Sergeant Debbie Gower said police were awaiting forensic results
of property seized from Waiouru houses and a workshop inside the army base
on December 18.

When asked if police had a list of suspects, Gower said: "I'm not prepared
to say that. That is something we will be working on next week."

Gower said the investigation team would be boosted this week to 12 officers
after four worked on the case over the holiday break.

Police had "various inquiries" they were still conducting, which she
declined to reveal. She encouraged the public to call 0800 Valour if they
had information about the medals.

Police are still seeking information on a mid to late 80s, possibly early
90s, light-coloured station wagon seen near the museum about 1am on December
2.

The stolen medals, whose value is estimated at $20m, include the VC and bar
won by Captain Charles Upham. It is believed the medals are still in New
Zealand.
