Thousands of books soaked in Wallingford library
5:42 AM EST, January 7, 2008
WALLINGFORD, Conn.
Wallingford library officials say thousands of books have been damaged by
water because a fire sprinkler went off for no apparent reason.
About 7,500 books at the Wallingford Public Library were soaked by water on
the main floor of the library in the newly constructed wing facing North
Main Street.
The president of the library board of managers says the damaged books were
primarily in the history, geography and biography subject areas. They also
represent less than 4 percent of the library's 192,322 collection of books.
The damaged books are being shipped to an Illinois company that will freeze
dry them to remove the water and it will cost about $60,000 to restore them.
