Police recover stolen art in Chesapeake; artist's son is charged
Chesapeake
Hampton police have recovered stolen paintings from a commercial storage
facility in the Western Branch section of Chesapeake.
The paintings were the personal works of Jean Craig Jones and her late
husband, Allan Jones, a couple whose art is represented in private
collections nationally. About 20 paintings, valued at $25,000, were stolen
from the Hampton home of Jean Craig Jones in October, according to Cpl.
Allison Good, a Hampton Police Division spokeswoman.
Some art was recovered this month at the storage unit in the 3100 block of
Bromay Street, according to police reports.
Hampton police arrested Dylan Jones on Dec. 31 on charges of grand larceny
and credit card theft, Good said. Dylan Jones is described in police reports
as the son of Jean Jones. According to a search warrant affidavit by Hampton
Detective George Barker, the son removed the artwork from the family home
without permission and failed to return the paintings.
Both artists are represented in the collections of the Virginia Museum of
Fine Arts, Hollins University, Longwood College, Washington and Lee
University and others, according to officials with Hampton Arts.
Their work is expected to be featured in an exhibit in spring in Hampton.
