Museum may upgrade security after meteorite slice is stolen
Associated Press - March 13, 2008 5:44 AM ET
LAKEVILLE, Ind. (AP) - The proprietors of a small space museum are
considering tighter security after the theft of a meteorite from the
collection.
Someone stole the 12-by-16-inch slice of a meteorite from the Joshua Tree
Earth and Space Museum in Lakeville late last week. The museum about 10
miles south of South Bend is offering a $500 reward for the return of the
object, valued at about $5,000.
Police advised the museum staff to monitor Web sites to see if someone tries
to sell the meteorite online.
Museum founder Terry Boswell says they may install security cameras.
Boswell says the theft wasn't the first at the museum. Another meteorite was
taken before the museum opened in 2002 and a fossil skull of a prehistoric
mammal was stolen a few years ago.
