Malacca museum artefact theft is inside job: Police
By Jason Gerald John

17 March, 2008

Police have concluded that the theft of 14 items from the Historic and
Ethnography Museum was an inside job, and that the thief was an expert. They
base their conclusion on the fact that the glass cases in which the items
were displayed were not disturbed, and there were no signs of a break-in at
the museum near the Stadthuys.

Either on Friday night or early Saturday morning 11 keris, eight dating back
to the Malacca Sultanate, and three Portuguese era pistols were stolen. The
items are estimated to be worth millions of ringgit.

State deputy criminal investigation department chief Superintendent R.
Gunarajan said yesterday: "Its an insider job, or someone from inside
helped. Or else how could the thief get in and leave without disturbing
anything? It is clear the thief is an expert, and had carefully selected
what he wanted to take away."

Individual collectors or antique dealers who may be approached to buy the
items should contact police at 06-285-4222.
