IRREPLACEABLE legal books are being specially treated for water damage after
weekend flooding caused havoc in the Supreme Court library building.
Legal volumes, some more than 100 years old, were removed from the 1960s
building after staff were confronted by the flooding when they arrived at
work today.
Advice was being sought from the State Library and a specialist book
treating company on how to best dry and preserve the damaged collection.
The leak is believed to have stemmed from a faulty connection between the
mains supply and a drinking tap on the third level of the building.
The section of the building was closed as workers mopped up the flooding.
A spokesman for the Courts Administration Authority said there was minimal
disruption to civil court cases.
He said it was fortunate the leak had not caused more damage to the library
collection, valued at about $4-million.
