Austria to loosen art claim rules
Published: 03/28/2008
Austria will expand the parameters of rules guaranteeing the return of
Nazi-looted art.
Claudia Schmied, the culture minister, announced the new rules on March 26,
saying they will encompass private foundations and cover the years
1933-1945, and not just 1938-1945, as they did previously.
Jewish groups said the old rules were overly restrictive and left out major
collectors, particularly in the Leopold Museum, a private museum that is
funded by the state.
The museum's collection includes "House by the Sea," an Egon Schiele
painting seized in 1938 and valued at $15 million. It is claimed by a
British family.
