A SCULPTURE stolen in a £1.5 million Parisian art robbery has been found in
Doncaster and returned to France. The £20,000 piece of artwork was
discovered in the Auction Rooms in the town centre in September 2005 after
going missing in a 1998 art heist.

The owner of the gallery Francoise Fabius spotted a picture of the
sculpture, which depicts a crocodile devouring an antelope, on the Auction
Rooms' website in 2005 and contacted French detectives who got in touch with
Interpol.

Police believe it had been transported from Paris to Belgium and then to
Doncaster.

The sculpture, created by artist Antoine-Loise Barye, is the only artefact
to have been recovered from the robbery so far.

Although Mr Fabius has since died, the sculpture was presented to French
police and will be handed to his widow.

Chief Superintendent Bob Sanderson, who was involved in the search, said:
"It is fantastic to finally be able to hand this statue back to the French
authorities so it can be returned to its rightful owner."
