Greek art off market due to forgery worry
A second painting purportedly by a Greek artist has been withdrawn from sale
by British auctioneers Bonhams due to doubts about its authenticity,
Sunday's Kathimerini has learned.
The oil on canvas, supposedly by Panayiotis Tetsis, called "Vue du port de
Marseille" (View of Marseilles Port) was due to go under the hammer in
London on May 20 and was expected to fetch up to 38,000 euros. Sources said
it was withdrawn due to doubts about the signature on the painting. Although
Tetsis had lived in Paris between 1953 and 1956, he never visited
Marseilles.
Last month, the sale of a painting by renowned Greek artist Dimitris Galanis
that was expected to fetch more than 60,000 euros at Bonhams was canceled
after Kathimerini revealed that there were at least two other versions of
the work of art in existence.
